What Prolific's Future Fifty recognition says about where AI still needs people

Tech Nation recently named Prolific in its Future Fifty cohort for 2026. Future Fifty backs the UK's most ambitious scaleups, and around 35% of the UK's unicorns have come through it at some point, including Revolut and Wise.

Being included alongside companies like Encord, who are doing serious work on AI infrastructure, is a real vote of confidence in what we've built at Prolific and in the direction we're taking it.

I spent the day at the Future Fifty Forum with founders, investors, and policymakers. As you'd expect, a lot of the conversation was coming back to AI and what it’s capable of.

In my view, the human part of the equation is a problem often being engineered away, but human knowledge is the core of what makes these systems trustworthy. Prolific works with frontier AI labs and researchers by connecting them with real people, whose judgement and expertise help build and evaluate systems people can rely on.

Robust human data infrastructure only becomes more important as models become more capable. It sounds unglamorous compared to model headlines, but it's work that real progress depends on: verification, feedback, and evaluation, done rigorously at scale.

That thesis is behind everything we're building now for AI training and evaluation, with a global network that's grown to over 300,000 people, over 90,000 of those qualified in fields like healthcare and engineering.

The recent Forum was a good reminder that the UK's AI ecosystem is more than headlines. It’s now surfacing the infrastructure behind the scenes.
